Lisa Marie Presley recalls her dark days of drug and alcohol abuse

Lately, more and more celebrities are opening up about their skirmishes with addiction. One of the latest to join the bandwagon is American singer-songwriter Lisa Marie Presley, 50. Not so long ago, she was in the headlines with details about her struggle with alcohol and drugs. The news was stirred up by Radar Online which obtained the legal documents that she had deposed during her divorce petition against producer and guitarist Michael Lockwood. In the documents, the star acknowledged her drug addiction, cocaine abuse and multiple rehab stays.

Daughter of the late American actor and singer Elvis Presley, the singer said that it was during the last three years of her marriage, from June 2013 to June 2016, especially the last year, when she started abusing painkillers and opioids. Her mother Reily Kough revealed that though her daughter was not very fond of alcohol, she would often end up mixing pills with it.

The singer also revealed that she was deep neck in debt and there was not much left of the inheritance from her father. She made headlines in 2005 when she sued her former manager Barry Siegel for an amount totaling around $100 million, claiming that he grossly mismanaged her trust. However, if reports are to be believed, the loss was actually more than the amount claimed.

Addiction is a chronic illness

Addiction is a severe brain condition in which an individual indulges in excessive use of drugs and alcohol that, in turn, leads to damaging effects on his/her mental as well as physical health. An individual can get addicted to various forms of substance, such as alcohol, cocaine, opioids or any other. However, the effects of these drugs on his/her health vary as per their usage and quantity. Some of the common ways in which drug abuse and addiction affects an individual are as mentioned below:

  • Poor performance at work/school
  • Weakened immune system
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Damaged brain
  • Aggressiveness
  • Hallucinations
  • Impaired judgment
  • Impulsiveness

It is, therefore, important for every individual to stay away from any trigger that might instigate him/her to abuse the substance in the first place.

 Seeking help is important

Addiction to any form of substance is dangerous and can lead to life-threatening conditions, including death. It is also important to understand that preventive measures do not altogether eliminate the risk of developing addiction. A host of factors like mental illness, stress, anxiety, family issues, etc., play their part in propelling one toward drug use.

Therefore, it is important for loved ones to be aware of the common symptoms that signify the development of addiction and seek help immediately. Consulting an expert, taking medications as advised and following the right treatment plan can help in ensuring that a person recovers completely and begins leading a healthy life. It is also important to understand that addiction is a mental problem and not a character flaw and one should be strong to fight away the associated stigma in order to seek the required treatment.
